Superintendent Michelle King to retire June 30

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Michelle King is expected to retire after undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. In a email sent by King, she says,

“Now, with the progression of my illness, I have made the incredibly difficult decision to retire by June 30. Until then, I will remain on medical leave.

I am very thankful for the support I have received from so many of you during this most challenging time.”

Acting Superintendent Vivian Ekchian praised for performance is expected to be a likely candidate.

Senior officials are also looking at Chief Academic Officer Frances Gipson who has support among some outside civic leaders, but the board is expected to look outside the LA School system as well.
